Do not feed your pet for 12 hours before surgery and no water for 8 hours before surgery. If your pet somehow sneaks some food , let the doctor know.  Food or water in the system is dangerous during surgery, as anesthesia can cause your pet to vomit, which can enter the windpipe and lungs and possibly cause asphyxiation.
